What Afenyo-Markin said before Greater Accra Regional Minister-designate was discharged by Parliament

The Greater Accra Regional Minister-designate, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo’s brief appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, has sparked massive conversations and discussions among the general public.

The nominee was expected to undergo long hours of questioning, as has been the norm since the vetting process began. However, she was cleared and dismissed by the committee without being asked questions about her role.

Her vetting which lasted less than ten minutes saw the nominee being told to introduce herself within 2 minutes.

The Ranking Member, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, after the nominee’s introduction, engaged in a brief exchange with her, inquiring about her roots and lineage in an attempt to verify her claims.

Afenyo-Markin then acknowledged the high-level delegation that accompanied Linda Ocloo to offer support. Despite expressing his willingness to ask the nominee questions, he set that aside and called on the chairman to proceed with her discharge.

“Chairman, I think the nominee is our colleague. I have seen our very senior former MP seated behind her and another senior of mine, former Kpone Katamanso MP, I’ve seen my respected colleague Ashie Moore, the former MP for Shai Osudoku is also there.

“Who else am I not seeing? Honorable nominee, I have seen Henry Quartey, former Greater Accra Regional Minister and former interior minister, I have also seen Titus Glover. It appears that you have an army of wise men supporting you,” he said.

He added, “You’ve conducted yourself well in parliament and you are a respected colleague. I have a few questions for you which may take some two hours but don’t panic. By your good conduct, I’m sure we will reserve those questions for another day. Congratulations, I don’t have the power to discharge you but I’m sure the chairman is going to discharge you. Have a blessed evening.”
