Hon Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, the Member of Parliament (MP)for Ada Constituency and the second Deputy Majority Whip, has asserted that her party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus holds the position of the Majority in parliament.
According to her, the law emphasizes the fact that one desists from being a member of a political party after filing as an independent candidate.
Comfort Cudjoe made reference to Hawa Yakubu who left her party to file as an independent candidate in 2003, arguing that her decision to file as an independent candidate brought about the by-elections in 2003.
“So that’s the law. The law states that your seat will be declared vacant if there’s a shift or a move. Both parties NDC and NPP also share a similar constitution where your seat is declared vacant once you file as an independent candidate. So no one has to write to anyone about your exit from the party because the constitution makes it clear”. She argued
According to Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, NPP has never been the Majority in parliament. She explained that the NPP were just a Majority group because they had the same seats as the NDC, 137 seats. But because an independent candidate joined them, it made them a Majority group in parliament and not the majority in parliament.
She further disclosed that due to the new changes now, with some members of the NPP filing as independence candidates, they automatically become a minority because the NDC holds the highest number of seats in parliament.
