John Mahama to implement a “Tree for Life” reforestation policy

 

 

John Dramani Mahama, former president and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), says he will implement a ‘Tree for Life’ reforestation policy when he emerges winner in the forthcoming elections.

 

This is aimed at transforming areas degraded by illegal mining into ecological recovery hub.

He made this known at the NDC’s manifesto launch in Winneba on 24th August, 2024.

Promoting responsible mining for sustainable development, he promised to place a ban on new mining activities in forest reserves.

 

He further said his government will amend the Mineral and Mining Law to impose stiffer punishment on mining in water bodies.

” The next NDC government will wage a ruthless war against the illegal mining menace and roll out an aggressive programme to reclaim our polluted water bodies, degraded lands and devastated forest reserves ”

 

“We will place a ban on new mining activities in forest reserves. Amend the Mineral and Mining Law to impose stiffer punishment on mining in water bodies”

 

“Decentralize regulatory and licensing processes for artisanal miners”

“Implement a ‘Tree for Life’ restoration policy and a Blue water initiative to heal and harness the environment by turning areas degraded by illegal mining into economic and ecological recovery hubs”
