The Agona West Member of Parliament (MP), Cynthia Mamle Morrison, has caused ripples within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by issuing a stern warning about exposing alleged mismanagement of COVID-19 funds by the ruling government.
In a bold statement, Morrison declared she is prepared to reveal deep secrets regarding how the government handled the funds if the NPP continues to block her candidacy in the upcoming December 7 parliamentary elections.
In a leaked audio intercepted by MyNewsGH, Morrison claimed the NPP had collaborated with the Electoral Commission to sabotage her campaign by excluding her name from the ballot papers. “They are conspiring against me, and I won’t sit quietly while they tamper with the democratic process. If they want to go down this road, I’m ready for a battle,” Morrison declared in the audio.
Her remarks follow recent legal hurdles placed in her path by her own party. On September 11, 2024, the Agona Swedru District Court, led by His Worship Victor Kusi, temporarily suspended Morrison’s nomination process as an Independent Candidate. This decision came after a lawsuit was filed by three plaintiffs—Emmanuel Addison, Solomon Nyarko, and Harrison K. Aglago—who argued that Morrison’s candidacy violated certain legal procedures.
The plaintiffs, represented by their lawyer Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, successfully secured an injunction preventing Morrison from continuing her campaign until the case is resolved. This legal action has raised concerns within her camp about deliberate attempts by the NPP to stifle her political ambitions.
Despite the legal challenges, Morrison remains defiant, claiming that the NPP is determined to silence her. “They are putting obstacles in my way because they fear what I know,” she stated. According to her, the NPP’s main objective is to prevent her from exposing the mismanagement of COVID-19 relief funds.
“I was involved only in paying the caterers for the COVID-19 food distribution, but others siphoned millions, and they know I’m aware. If they want war, I will reveal all the details,” Morrison warned. Her statements suggest that there are underlying tensions between her and top officials in the NPP, who she believes are using every available means to undermine her campaign.
The MP’s decision to run as an Independent Candidate has sent shockwaves through the NPP, as her departure could potentially weaken the party’s hold on the Agona West constituency. Morrison, once a prominent figure within the party, has grown increasingly disillusioned with the NPP leadership, citing internal politics and attempts to marginalize her contributions as key reasons for her independent bid.
