Double track enabled 181, 933 students to access Free SHS- Deputy Director General, GES

The deputy director General of Ghana Education Service (GES), who also doubles as a member of the educational committee for the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 manifesto (NPP), Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh has revealed that the implementation of the Double track system ensured the enrollment of 181,933 students in Senior High school in 2018.

He noted that without the double track system, numerous students would be denied access to Free SHS.

Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV, on 25th September, 2024, he touted the government for the introduction of double track system, asserting that it is a social intervention programme.

“In 2018, there was a surge in the percentage of students who sat for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). So we did an analysis to ascertain the total number of students who will be entering senior high schools.

“We got to know that the students exceeded the available facilities. The infrastructure could not accommodate them. That is why we introduced the double track system to prevent 181,933 students from staying home” he explained.

Recounting the impact of Free SHS policy, Mr. Bempah said the programme has brought equity.

“Free SHS has brought equity. Whether you are a male or female, rich or poor, you can access Free education. The reason I’m saying this is that, before we assumed office in 2016/2017, 35 per cent of senior high school students were females, and males taking 65 per cent so there was no equity” he added.

He However commended the Akufo-Addo led administration for its enormous efforts towards the educational sector.
