The reality in Reels: How films reflect life

In the wake of films, we tend to reflect on the themes. Resonating with movies or not, our emotions are evoked. I opine that movies depict reality. The animations, music, characters, and the various themes highlight the happenings of our daily lives.

The notion that movies are fictious is contentious. Thus, as an Arts journalist, it is of great importance to educate society on the contribution of films to shaping reality.

Using the Lion King as a case study and in relation to the Ghanaian society;

The Lion King is a movie that was released in 1994. It underscores the types of human traits, through animations. One Central idea from the movie is Struggle for Power.

Mufasa was the Lion King. He had an only child named Simba. Normally, a child takes after his or her parents. However, it was observed that Mufasa’s brother who referred to as Scar, wanted to assume that position. Scar was not the rightful successor, but since he wallowed in greed, he decided to kill Mufasa and succeed him forcefully.

This theme is dominant in Africa, emphasizing Ghana. We often see and hear people kill their relatives due to Kingship. In politics, politicians do everything just to capture power. They go to the extreme point of backbiting their opponents just to become leaders.

Love and Affection was also Central in this film. Mufasa’s relationship with Simba exemplifies parental love and care. Mufasa was always there for him anytime he got into trouble. Simba was taught to take responsibility for his actions .

One of the values inculcated in Ghanaians through socialization, is to be each brother’s keeper. Love and care for everybody. This value is transmitted from generation to generation.

Betrayal was exhibited in the movie and is very common in the Ghanaian society. Scar betrayed the animals he plotted with into killing Mufasa. After forcefully ascended the throne, he did not fulfil his promises.

This trait is very prevalent among politicians. Politicians always make promises whenever they want power but due to their selfishness, the pledges continue to remain empty.

A practical example is when former president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo promised that every constituency will receive one million dollars in his 2016 manifesto. After securing victory in the election, this pledge wasn’t fulfilled.

Punishment was also observed in the Lion King. The foes of Mufasa descended on Simba when he crossed borders and entered their territory.

In Ghana, if an immigrant enters the nation illegally, the person is subjected to prosecution. People are often sentenced to prison for the attempts to trespass borders illegally.

Bravery was also significant in the Lion King. The comeback of Simba to save his people from the hands of Scar, symbolises confidence and bravery. He also made Scar confess his sins, holding him accountable for his wicked actions.

Ghanaians usually hold their leaders accountable for their actions. This is sometimes done through voting. If Ghanaians are unsatisfied with a party’s governance, they vote against them.

For instance in the just ended 2024 general elections, Ghanaians were brave enough to kick the NPP out of government for making life unbearable in their administration.

Ultimately, the movie teaches that life is a circle, where destiny plays a vital role. It suggests that if something is meant for us, it comes at the opportune time. With this, I infer from the Lion King that, most movies depict reality.
